Formica Group Earns Three “Best Of” Awards for Laminate Design

Formica® Brand Laminate recognized by industry organizations, editors and readers

CINCINNATI (Dec. 15, 2017) — Formica Corporation, the inventor of laminate, has been honored with three “best of the year” awards recognizing exceptional surface design:

  • Formica® Laminate White Marble Herringbone design won the Golden Cylinder Award for Decorative Laminates and was honored as the Best of the Best for all categories by the Gravure Association of the Americas (GAA).
  • The Tinted and Tonal Paper Terrazzo designs won Best of the Year in the Green Innovation category from InteriorDesign magazine.
  • dECOLeather® Recycled Leather Veneer was recognized as interiors + sources Readers' Choice: Best Products of 2017 in the Surfacing category.

“These awards are a culmination of years of research and reflect Formica Group’s ongoing commitment to innovative product design,” said Amy Gath, vice president of marketing at Formica Group. “What makes these awards even more special is that they come from three distinct judging panels: a trade organization, the media who covers the interior design industry, and finally, our peers—fellow readers of a popular interior design publication.”

Golden Cylinder Award
The Golden Cylinder Awards Competition is held annually by the GAA to promote the gravure print process and provide peer recognition for technical achievement. The award is designed to identify the ‘Best of the Best’ in each segment of the industry and distinguish technical innovations.

“The judges were impressed with the clean sharp details and technical smoothness of the White Marble Herringbone’s print on paper substrate,” said Renee Hytry Derrington, global design lead at Formica Group.

The Formica Group design team initiated the project with Interprint, a supplier partner who prints décor paper, to create the White Marble Herringbone. Interprint entered the design into the Golden Cylinder Awards competition under the prototype name Kingscot Marble.

InteriorDesign magazine Best of Year Award
InteriorDesign’s Best of Year Awards is a highly recognized award program in the industry that honors the most significant products and projects of the year. The Tinted and Tonal Paper Terrazzo designs won Best of the Year in the Green Innovation category.

The two designs were part of the Smart Organic palette for SurfaceSet® 2018 by Formica Corporation. With future generations in mind, this palette brings nature and man-made materials together to create something entirely new. The two Paper Terrazzo patterns utilize small fragments of post-production solid color paper from Formica® Laminate that would otherwise have gone to waste.
