Sushi X embarked on a renovation of its intimate space to update the décor and give it a “spark”.
Designer Deanna Kuhlmann-Leavitt of Kuhlmann Leavitt Inc. teamed up with award-winning artist Joel Nakamura to transform the space and create a focal point that was not only eye-catching but memorable.

Known for his unique style – a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique – Nakamura created a vibrant image featuring sea creatures that could be easily viewed from two sides.
After processing a series of sketches and deciding on one, the team used Formica Envision customizable laminate to transform the hand-painted art into a captivating sushi table.
“The artwork is hand painted with polymer paints on a tin panel. It was incredible to see the image come to life laminated to the surface of a table. The creative possibilities of this process are fantastic. It was a really fun project to be part of.”
