December Pattern – Skylark/Boomerang

This 1950s pattern is arguably the most iconic in the Formica® laminate range. 

When people think of classic Formica laminate patterns, they often think of Boomerang, originally called Skylark. Iconically Mid-Century in its design, Boomerang has been a staple of residential and commercial spaces for more than 70 years.

1951: John Hughes of Brooks Stevens Design Associates creates the original Skylark design. He drew the pattern to customise the interior of passenger trains.

1954: Raymond Loewy Associates evolves the pattern by colour styling it for the Sunrise Collection.

1988: Skylark is renamed Boomerang to celebrate  Formica Group’s 75th anniversary. In-house Design Director for North America, Alex DeGregori styles the pattern in four postmodern colours using a rotary silkscreen method. 

2005: Due to frequent requests for retro patterns, Renee Hytry Derrington colour styles Boomerang in the hues of the 1950s. These selections are included as part of the internationally launched Classics Collection, which also included VirrVarr.
