Formica Canada and Group Companies Cut Carbon Emissions by 39 %

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, March 25, 2026 — For the fifth year running, Formica Canada is releasing its annual sustainability report. This latest edition takes a wider scope, consolidating results from all Broadview Materials Group companies to capture the collective efforts of the entire international organization — 14 plants across North America, Asia and Europe — and to highlight the concrete, global impact of every initiative undertaken. Between 2019 and 2024, the Group's carbon emissions dropped by 39%, falling from 420 kt CO2eq. to 258 kt CO2eq., a reduction of 162 kt CO2eq. In 2024 alone, the carbon footprint shrank by 34 kilotonnes CO2eq., and an additional reduction of approximately 30 kilotonnes CO₂eq. is anticipated for 2025, with results to be published shortly.

The Group's sustainability strategy rests on four pillars: measure, act, monitor and share. To assess the environmental impact of its operations, Formica Corporation applies the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which identifies and quantifies energy and material inputs alongside the waste and emissions generated throughout production.

For several years, Broadview Materials Group measured its environmental performance on a "cradle to gate" basis — tracking materials from their source to the factory door. In 2025, the Group took the next step, beginning work to evaluate its full environmental footprint on a "cradle to grave" basis, from the origin of raw materials all the way through end-of-life disposal. This expanded scope matters because how a product is ultimately disposed of can affect its overall sustainability profile. This second phase is more complex to measure: factories have limited visibility into how products are used after installation, particularly given the long service life of Formica Group products and the potential for repurpose or reuse.

Across its facilities, the company has identified and implemented a range of changes that have reduced energy and material consumption and replaced the inputs with the greatest negative impact on its carbon footprint. Among the priorities: actively substituting fossil-based materials with renewable, biobased alternatives.

In total, the Group's factories have identified a potential to reduce their footprint by 216 kilotonnes CO2eq., and work continues to uncover new opportunities.

Sustainability at the Heart of Formica's Values

Beyond its factory-level decarbonization projects, Formica Corporation recognizes that sustainability touches every aspect of the business. The company has established a Green Team with a mandate to keep pace with sustainability trends and developments in both the commercial and residential markets, and to communicate the company's commitments in this area to customers and partners.

In recent years, Formica has also used its various platforms to shine a light on projects and partners who share its values around sustainability — raising awareness of these initiatives and encouraging others in the industry to follow suit.

Ongoing initiatives at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Plant

Several projects at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu facility have delivered meaningful reductions in natural gas consumption:

Buffer tanks — Heat recovery tanks installed in 2024 capture hot water from the press during the cooling phase and redirect it for use in the next heating cycle. This modification has cut annual natural gas consumption by 12%.

Heat exchangers — The installation of heat exchangers on the impregnator has reduced natural gas consumption across the facility by 5%.

Hot water production from RTO (regenerative thermal oxidizer) energy — A new air/water exchanger installed at the RTO outlet recovers energy to heat water in the accumulator upstream of the existing air/air exchanger. This improvement is expected to reduce the plant's annual natural gas consumption by a further 5%.

Together, these three projects will reduce natural gas consumption at the Formica Canada plant by more than 20%.

USDA BioPreferred® Biobased Product Certification

In 2025, Formica Corporation received BioPreferred® biobased product certification from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for Formica® brand laminate and Compact products. At 72 % biobased content, Formica® brand laminate holds the highest certified biobased content level among leading high-pressure laminate (HPL) manufacturers.

Looking Ahead
In 2026, the Group is targeting an additional 25 kt CO2eq. reduction through projects underway at its facilities. Once the estimated 2025 reductions and the planned 2026 reductions are achieved, a remaining reduction potential of 141 kt CO₂eq. will still be available, broken down as follows:

  • 10% through energy optimization
  • 10% through material efficiency initiatives
  • 60% through the adoption of lower-impact raw materials
  • 20% through the transition to renewable energy

The greatest potential for reduction lies primarily in innovations that redefine the raw materials used across the Group's plants. In addition, prioritizing suppliers with strong environmental performance will play a significant role in achieving these targets.

“These results demonstrate the real impact of the work our teams are doing to continuously improve our processes and reduce our environmental footprint. At Formica Canada, we are proud to be part of this transformation and to advance more sustainable solutions for our customers and partners,” says Christelle Locat-Rainville, Marketing Manager at Formica Canada and Commercial Sustainability Leader.
