Biophilic Designs to Promote Peace of Mind

Bringing nature indoors isn’t just beautiful; it can support emotional wellbeing and peace of mind. Biophilic design leverages patterns, textures and materials inspired by the outdoors to create environments that feel balanced, calming and restorative. Thoughtful surface choices, especially nature-inspired products help shape spaces that resonate with serenity and connection to the natural world.

Biophilic spaces draw from the healing qualities of nature to reduce stress and encourage relaxation. Surfaces that reflect organic forms, earthy colours and tactile depth can make interiors feel more grounded and harmonious.

These qualities are especially valuable in commercial environments such as healthcare settings, workplaces and hospitality spaces, where thoughtful design can support comfort, focus and a sense of wellbeing for visitors, patients and staff alike.

Formica^® Laminates offer multiple designs inspired by natural elements that evoke healing and comfort. One standout is 9925 Foliage, which captures soft gray-green and beige leaf silhouettes on a gentle background that brings a sense of calm to countertops and other surfaces.

Another nature-inspired visual is 9924 Patine Stone, reminiscent of moss and lichen-like mineral patterns with rich golden beige, cool gray and natural green mottle. This pattern adds depth and organic interest while still feeling grounded and restful.

These nature-inspired visuals can help soften the atmosphere of commercial interiors such as patient rooms, reception areas and collaborative workspaces, where calming surroundings can positively influence how people experience a space.

For large-scale visuals that truly channel the outdoors, 180fx^® Laminate delivers high-resolution stone patterns with authentic presence. Products like 9920 Jatoba Green 180fx^® Laminate bring rich forest-inspired greens and subtle juniper and sage highlights into spaces, offering visual texture that connects minds to nature’s palette without the maintenance of real stone.

Other 180fx^® patterns, such as 9918 Breccia Mojave, 3420 Dolce Vita and 9916 Fractured Marble, offer sophisticated stone aesthetics that lend depth and character to interiors, reinforcing the sense of natural beauty and peaceful retreat.

Biophilic design doesn’t require sweeping architectural change. Even strategic surface selections, combining calming patterns, natural stone visuals and organic colour relationships, can transform a space into a nurturing environment.

In healthcare and other high-traffic commercial settings, these nature-inspired surfaces can help create welcoming environments that balance durability with visual comfort. Pair items from the Formica^® Portfolio of Surfacing Solutions with nature-inspired paint colours, fabrics or wood accents to boost their effect even more.

A little nature can go a long way.
