Kitchen Report 2019: 100 Years in UK Kitchen Design

Formica launches an exclusive report on kitchen usage through the years.

Surfacing manufacturer Formica Group has released a report on consumer kitchen use, offering key insights into kitchen design and philosophy. Based on a UK-wide survey of 2,000 people, the 2019 Kitchen Report combines an evaluation of past trends with an exploration of current needs, while offering a glimpse into the future of kitchen design.

100 Years in UK Kitchen Design begins with the invention of the chimney in the 16th century, signifying the dawn of the kitchen as open-fire cooking is brought indoors. However, it wasn’t until the second half of the 20th century when the kitchen was no longer shunned as an unpleasant, smoky room, and embraced as a social hub.

From the 1930s onwards, the British kitchen has undergone many transformations in style and function, in line with the changing attitudes of the generations who used them. The report highlights how, despite their expanding role, kitchens have actually decreased in size; it also explains the impact of the microwave, evolving diets and celebrity chefs on popular kitchen design.

The survey results clearly show how the modern kitchen is a multifunctional space, especially among younger people who use it for a range of activities, from socialising to studying. Intriguingly, the report explores the theme of changing gender roles and the significance of the kitchen as a space in relation to this.

Preferences and bugbears are uncovered too. Favourite features include breakfast bars and central islands, while a lack of storage space and food-preparation areas are common complaints. Modern, country farmhouse and traditional kitchen styles are emphasised, although the research does identify a distinct openness among respondents to adopt different looks and trends.

The 2019 Kitchen Report incorporates in-depth advice for enhancing contemporary kitchens, featuring expert insight from a leading design practice. Highly personalised, compact spaces are coming to the fore, with minute detailing, designer lighting and custom storage more important than ever. As for the future, the report investigates multifunctional equipment, green living and artificial intelligence within the kitchen, and explains how efficiency and effectiveness will continue to dominate the most important space in the home for years to come.
