About the Competition:

The FORM Student Innovation Competition is a modern take on the original “FORM: Contemporary Architects at Play” challenge, held by Formica Corporation in 2008. Ten world-renowned architects, including Zaha Hadid, Michael Graves, Bernard Tschumi and Massimo Vignelli, constructed new works of art from Formica® Brand products.

Here are the winners of the 2019 FORM Student Innovation Competition:

Grand Prize: Alyssa Holcomb, of Edmond, Okla., USA | University of Central Oklahoma | “Shrug Chair” Alyssa’s Shrug Chair design is inspired by midcentury bent plywood furniture and features a comfortable look that invites people to “shrug off” their cares.

Second Place: Rachel Marie Thompson, of Sinking Spring, Pa., USA | Kean University | “ke-li-de-skop” Returning to the roster of FORM winners for the second year in a row, Rachel’s design features a striking design and inviting colours, similar to what might be seen through a classic children’s kaleidoscope toy.

Third Place: Mallory Bouchard, of Provo, Utah, USA | Weber State University | “Hex Link Chair” Mallory's design was inspired by biophilic designs and takes on one of nature’s favorite shapes to create a functional work of art.
