Formica Canada Inc. launches its new SurfaceSet® 2018 collection

32 new laminates to refresh, rethink and recreate commercial interior spaces

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Canada, October 2, 2017 — Fusing beautiful design with purposeful functionality inspired by the concepts of balance and tension, SurfaceSet® 2018 by Formica Canada Inc. includes 32 new Formica® Laminate colours, patterns and woodgrain designs, and one new finish. The collection features three newly interpreted and curated palettes (Personal Sanctuary, Spectral and Smart Organic) for commercial interior spaces which illustrate the balance and tension between man-made and natural materials.

The SurfaceSet® 2018 laminate collection is the result of extensive design and style research by Formica Group’s international design team. Drawing inspiration from our ever-changing world, the collection offers a wide range of surfacing options, from Scandinavian-inspired maples to artistic paint scrapes to the look of reused raw materials, which enables designers to create interiors that are meaningful to those who spend time in them.

“At a time of global turbulence, shrinking urban spaces and the effects of technology overload, we’re seeking ways to refresh, renew and transform the spaces that surround us. The SurfaceSet® 2018 laminate collection makes it possible for people to reinvent their living spaces and create a realm that reflects who they are where they feel good and can connect with others,” says Renee Hytree Derrington, global design lead for Formica Group.

Personal Sanctuary: comfort amid chaos

The Personal Sanctuary palette celebrates emotional connections to everyday objects as personal time and spaces become more precious. It includes colours and patterns in a mix of soft textures and smooth finishes that invite us to touch and interact. Frosted and translucent effects create private enclaves within large shared spaces, while the patina of aged metal and woodgrains evoke the Scandinavian way of living well and simply.

Personal Sanctuary’s warm hues are balanced with soft tones that add an elegant feel to neutrals. Colours and patterns such as Just Rose, Danish Maple, Winter Sky and Blackened and Bronzed Steel make for a fresh look, while three new Birchply designs add texture and recreate the look of plywood in modern, light wood tones, perfect for spaces designed for comfort and taking refuge.

Spectral: colour goes freehand

Inspired by fine art, the Spectral palette applies colour in a free, unfettered fashion, revealing the maker’s hand. The Paint Scrape pattern, which is available in two designs (Steel and Sky), gives the appearance of layered paint applied to a canvas and then scraped off to reveal a grid-like layout. Spontaneous pops of colour are thus revealed, creating a surface with an intriguing tactile profile that enhances the sensory experience its strong, saturated colours provide. Brimming with creativity, the artful interaction of boldly layered, full-spectrum colour lends a welcome feeling of energy and optimism.

This palette’s bold primary tones used in contrasting combinations add richness and depth as well as a contemporary vibe to any space. Chrome Yellow, Matrix Blue and Spectrum Green create bold and vibrant spaces.

Smart Organic: rethinking and remaking materials

Nature and man-made materials come together to create something entirely new and eco-friendly. Taking recycling one step further, we rethought what we throw away to produce something truly original. The intent is not only to maximize our resources but also to manipulate and combine them with synthetic materials to create intriguing new composites.

For example, two Paper Terrazzo patterns use small fragments of post-production solid colour paper from Formica® Laminate that would otherwise have gone to waste to create a bold, textured-looking pattern. The palette also includes three Bubble designs, which are the product of printing inks mixed with soap and bubbles blown on industrial grade paper. Additional offerings include natural and man-made greens, greys and warm tones in colours such as Green Slate, Weathered Fiberwood and Enamel.

New Plex finish: crisp touch with low-gloss sheen

The latest arrival in the collection is Plex, a new small-scale, versatile surface finish with a textile feel that can be used to enhance all solid colours and patterns, including the new Paint Scrape laminate designs.
