Introduction

The Formica® brand name, used continuously by the Company and its predecessors since 1913, is the strongest trademark in the industry and ranks among the world’s most recognized logos and trademarks. Additionally, Formica Corporation produces products throughout the world that bear many other distinctive trademarks.

The Formica® brand name, trademarks and logos are valuable assets of The Diller Corporation, and it is extremely important that they be used in a manner that consistently communicates a longstanding commitment to quality, dependability and integrity. In order to maintain these important assets, it is required that the Formica® brand name, trademarks and logos be used precisely and consistently.

The Diller Corporation does not want its valuable trademarks lost because of careless or improper use. Most difficulties can be avoided when users of the marks remember that a trademark is classified grammatically as a proper adjective, identifying a particular brand of some product; it is not the name of the product itself and, therefore, is not a noun. Accordingly, a trademark should always be followed by the generic or common name of the product to which the trademark relates. For example, it is appropriate to refer to Formica® brand laminate.

This manual is a guide to the correct use of the Formica® brand name, trademarks and logos owned by The Diller Corporation. Those who are involved with the specific use of this information should find this manual helpful and convenient to use, whether they are within Formica Corporation or among its customers, distributors, dealers, suppliers, licensees or advertising agencies. Formica Corporation and its subsidiaries and affiliates are licensees of the Formica® brand name, trademarks and logos, which are owned by The Diller Corporation. The Diller Corporation is a sister corporation to Formica Corporation.

The Corporate Name

Formica Corporation is our corporate name and, therefore, a proper noun. The two words are always to appear together and each is to begin with an initial capital letter. The word "the" is never to be used in front of Formica Corporation.

The Trademark

Formica® is a registered trademark and should be used as an adjective. It should only be used to identify the group of products, or one of the products, made by Formica Corporation or under license from Formica Corporation. When used in text, Formica® should be set with an initial capital F and followed by the symbol “®” and it must be followed with the word “brand” and a descriptive term such as "laminate" or "products" which it modifies. The trademark must never be used in the possessive form. Thus, it is improper to refer to Formica’s durability. However, it is acceptable to refer to the durability of Formica® brand laminate.

The trademark notice, “Formica and the Formica logo are registered trademarks of The Diller Corporation” must appear once on all advertisements or other promotional materials bearing the Formica logo. This legend may be conveniently placed at the bottom of the page, or on the inside of the front or back covers of brochures.

The Logo
The Formica corporate logo serves to indicate the common source of an ever-expanding line of products. The logo is the distinctive and familiar anvil-shaped symbol used with the Formica®word trademark. It should be used only in connection with our products.

This single version of the Formica logo serves to identify the company, its products, and its operations around the world. The word “Formica” and the “anvil F” form have been specially redrawn, and the entire configuration has been digitized for electronic application. Do not alter it in any way. Note that the logo is no longer accompanied by the modifiers “BRAND,” “laminate,” “products” or local trademark. The following trademark notice must appear once on all advertisements or other promotional materials bearing the logo: “Formica and the Formica logo are registered trademarks of The Diller Corporation.”
Product Logos
In addition to the Formica anvil “F” logo, we have also developed logos which represent our specific products and collections. Note that registered trademark: ® and trademark TM symbols appear depending on the legal status of each brand name. The Formica anvil “F” logo is part of all product logos and must always appear.

An important element of the product logo is the modifier. The modifier must accompany the product logo and may only be eliminated when it is reduced below a legible size.

The typeface used for the product name has been created exclusively for Formica Corporation and is not available commercially. Do not substitute any typeface in its place.

Product Logos Primary Arrangements
There are two preferred arrangements for use of the product logo in advertising or promotional material. In addition to the Formica logo, the product names are listed large, in one line or stacked in two lines. The modifier is used with both arrangements.

There is a very precise relationship between the position of the logo and the product name components. This relationship, which affects both the size and position of the two elements, cannot be altered (see examples).
Product Logos Vertical Arrangements
The primary arrangements of the Formica product logos are intended to be used for most applications. If, however, the primary arrangements prove to be too wide, the vertical arrangements may be used. These arrangements tack the system elements in a flush left alignment to allow for a greater variety of uses and cannot be modified. As with the primary arrangements, the product names can be displayed in one line or stacked in two lines with the modifier underneath, as shown below. The Formica logo must always appear.
