New Formica® Solid Surfacing Offers Natural and Man-Made Looks In a New Twist in Interiors, Man-Made Materials Now Mimic Other Man-Made Materials
CINCINNATI (June 1, 2006) – For years, solid surfacing has replicated the colors and textures of natural materials such as stone and granite. Now, with the growing trend for combining natural and man-made materials in interior design, Formica Corporation provides both options with its new solid surfacing introductions. In addition to materials evoking nature’s beauty, the surfacing industry innovator offers a new design twist: man-made materials that mimic other man-made materials.
All of the new solid surfacing designs replicate familiar colors and textures, from Nature’s glimmering “tiger’s eye” stones and milky “mother-of-pearl” shells, to spunky Art Deco colors found in “Bakelite” plastic jewelry, radios and kitchen cutlery.
According to the Color Marketing Group 2006 Color Forecast, consumers want to find a balance in their lives between the influences of nature and the pace of technological advances, and they order their lives and base purchasing decisions on this somewhat surreal balance.
“As the trend cycle continues to evolve and the world becomes less cautious, consumers are allowing ‘materials for materials’ sake’ into their interiors,” says Renée Hytry, senior vice president, global design for Formica Corporation. “Today’s consumers want to break the rules of traditional design and live with beautiful mixtures of materials that make them feel comfortable.” Replicating the Best of Nature and the Best of Man Formica Corporation introduces two new solid surfacing series that authentically replicate the colors and textures created by nature or man: the Nugget Series and the Mica Series. Additionally, the acclaimed Artifact Series and Concrete Series have expanded with new and innovative designs.
The Nugget Series features warm brown “tiger’s eye” fragments in a shimmering metallic background, making it an excellent complement to natural woods. For example, the Gold Nugget pattern features a glowing amber color that works well with oak and maple. Copper Nugget exudes a warm, lustrous tone that blends beautifully with cherry and mahogany. The Nugget Series joins the Formica Solid Surfacing Classics Collection.
The Concrete Series expands with the addition of Real Concrete solid surfacing, a stylish, easy-care alternative to cast concrete countertops. Presenting a soft warm “gravel” gray color, it is designed to coordinate with Formica high pressure laminate Realcrete, which is also being introduced this year. The Concrete Series is now a part of the Formica Solid Surfacing Traditions Collection.
The Mica Series does not try to mimic nature, but rather celebrates the nostalgic tradition of Bakelite™, the first true plastic of the Art Deco period. This new solid surfacing option is reminiscent of the popular man-made material that designers of the era transformed into colorful home accessories and wearable items such as rings, bangles and pins.
The Mica Series is the first visual added to the Formica Solid Surfacing range that does not have a standard particulate-based design. Instead, several new retro-inspired colors are highlighted with fine silver “mica” particles swirled in circular patterns. They include Pearl Mica, a pearlized white color in the fashion of “mother of pearl;” Vintage Green Mica, a burst of apple green inspired by retro-look accessories of the same color; and Amber Mica, a golden translucent look in the rich Art Deco tradition.
Rounding out the series are two new colors that coordinate with Formica solid surfacing sink colors. Mineral Mica is a rich, bronzed brown that coordinates with the new Bronze vanity bowl color, and Nickel Mica is a metalized gray that coordinates with the Nickel sink color. The Mica Series is part of the new Formica Solid Surfacing Designer Series. The Artifact Series reflects the popular trend of woody browns and water-based blues. Burnished, inspired by warm metals such as bronze and copper, is a rich, red-brown with amber highlights. Spa, a sophisticated, water-inspired blue with a hint of shimmer and translucency, will bring tranquility to any residential or commercial interior. Each of these designs posses the beautiful light reflective quality of the existing Artifacts – Treasure and Copper.
All of the new Formica Solid Surfacing collections blend the best features and benefits of acrylic, a superior resin system which creates exceptional clarity and color depth, to develop one of the most durable solid surfacing materials on the market. Formica Solid Surfacing has been awarded with GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification and is also NSF-certified to not harbor bacterial growth. It also resists stains and scratches, and can be fabricated into endless design, edge and inlay options.
