Formica Corporation Debuts “From Where We Sit”
A collection of sculptural furniture by ten world-renowned architects on tour through 2010
CINCINNATI (June 2008) – Ten world-renowned architects with ties to Cincinnati were asked to design an object that people could sit upon, lie upon, lean upon, play upon. The only stipulation—it must be created with Formica® brand materials.
As a result, Formica Corporation unveils “From Where We Sit”, a limited-edition collection of sculptural furniture that runs a spectrum of scale, design and intent. The collection can be viewed at http://www.formicafromwherewesit.com and will tour globally through 2010.
“Formica Corporation has evolved in the design community,” said Renee Hytry Derrington, senior vice president of Global Design, Formica Corporation. “Throughout our history, designers and architects have inspired our vision and challenged our product perceptions. “From Where We Sit” continues this tradition by moving our materials beyond surfacing to become structural elements.”
Participating architects and their work include: • Peter Eisenman, Eisenman Architects: Chair #1, 2008 • Michael Graves, Michael Graves Design Group: J Chair, 2008 • Zaha Hadid, Zaha Hadid Architects: Cirrus, 2008 • Thom Mayne, Morphosis: Untitled, 2008 • Bill Pedersen, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates PC: TransFormica, 2008 • Laurinda Spear, Arquitectonica: Trelleaf, 2008 • Bernard Tschumi, Bernard Tschumi Architects: Typogram, 2008 • Jaime Velez, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, LLP: Dancing Line, 2008 • Massimo Vignelli, Vignelli Designs, Inc.: CuboSeat, 2008 • Buzz Yudell, Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners: Sunergy, 2008
The pieces are constructed from more than 4,521 square feet of Formica® Laminate, ColorCore2™, Compact™ and Solid Surfacing. “This collection truly offers a broad range in the architectural design spectrum from museum-worthy forms to domestic-scale showpieces,” said Max Protetch, premier New York gallery owner. “For example, Zaha Hadid's work, as in her architecture, speaks about function through newly invented forms. Other designs give more consideration to ideas such as comfort or composition based on the materials. Even with the diversity of approaches, all engage artistry and architecture, and all present the latest in contemporary ideas.”

The collection is made possible in partnership with the Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (CAC) in Cincinnati and will be on display there through August 31, 2008.
