FORMICA CORPORATION ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN NEW WESTERN REGION DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN SHAFTER, CALIF. |
CINCINNATI (August 11, 2006) – Formica Corporation announced today that it will open a new distribution center in Shafter, Calif., near Bakersfield. The location in Shafter was selected as it is optimally located to best serve the majority of the company’s customers in the Western Region.
“Earlier this year, we announced our plans to invest up to $25 million in new equipment and facilities upgrades in North America as part of an ongoing commitment to enhance our manufacturing, distribution and service capabilities worldwide,” said Mike Fischer, president, Formica Corporation North America. “By shifting the distribution center from Rocklin to Shafter, we are achieving an operations and service model that will improve flexibility, lead times and service capabilities, all designed to meet our customers’ future needs for surfacing solutions.”
Formica Corporation announced in May that it will cease operations at its Sierra facility in Rocklin, CA which included the distribution center.
According to Fischer, the new Shafter location will allow the company to reach 25 percent more of its Western Region customers within one day, and 99 percent of its customer volume within two days. Additionally, a new footprint for the 98,000-square-foot building was designed by a team of experienced professionals to enhance overall operations which will ultimately provide customers with better service. The layout will also serve as a model for Formica Corporation’s other distribution centers.
Formica Corporation also announced that Greg Weiss, manager of the company’s Dallas distribution center for the past five years, will manage the new Shafter distribution center. Weiss will lead a team of 35-40 associates and the distribution center will operate two shifts. Kevin Shinagawa, production and warehouse manager at the Sierra facility, has been named the new manager for the Dallas distribution center.
The new Shafter distribution center will begin a phased shipping schedule beginning November 2006 and will become fully operational in February 2007. As of this date, all Formica® brand products for the Western Region will be shipped from the new Shafter location.
